**Short answer:** For a paid replacement that works like cPanel for shared and reseller hosting, DirectAdmin is the closest match. Its Standard licence is $29 a month per server with no account limit, and it imports cPanel backups. Plesk is the choice if you need Windows/IIS, and Enhance suits multi-server fleets priced per website. Among free panels, ISPConfig, Virtualmin GPL and HestiaCP are actively maintained open-source options. CyberPanel, CloudPanel and aaPanel are free single-server panels with narrower scopes. None of the nine is abandoned: each has a 2026 release or an active product page. But CyberPanel suffered mass ransomware exploitation in 2024, and several free panels had critical root-level bugs this year, so patch speed matters as much as price.

Every price, version and supported OS below was read from each project’s own website or documentation on 7 October 2026. Security incidents come from the NVD records and vendor advisories we link. We have not installed these alternative panels on our lab servers. The DirectAdmin details match what we see on our DirectAdmin 1.712 lab server (da1).

## The alternatives at a glance

Prices last checked: 7 October 2026, on each vendor’s pricing page (linked in each section below). “Latest release” is the newest version we saw on the project’s own site that day.

## Commercial replacements: DirectAdmin, Plesk, Enhance

### DirectAdmin

DirectAdmin’s [pricing page](https://www.directadmin.com/pricing.php) lists Personal PLUS at $5 a month (2 accounts, 20 domains), Lite at $15 (10 accounts, 50 domains) and Standard at $29 (unlimited). The admin and resellers count toward the account limits. Like WHM and cPanel, it has admin, reseller and user levels, and it runs Exim, Dovecot, BIND and MariaDB.

It restores cPanel `cpmove` archives directly, so moving from cPanel is the best-documented path of any panel here. It does not support PostgreSQL or Ruby apps. [Migrate cPanel to DirectAdmin](/guides/migrate-cpanel-to-directadmin/) covers the move.

### Plesk

Plesk’s [pricing page](https://www.plesk.com/pricing/) shows Web Admin at $16.99 a month (10 domains), Web Pro at $29.99 (30 domains) and Web Host at $62.99 on a VPS or $69.99 on dedicated (unlimited). Web Admin has no customer account management, and only Web Host includes resellers. It is the only panel here that manages Windows Server and IIS, and it develops WP Toolkit. WHM’s Transfer Tool and Plesk Migrator move accounts in either direction.

### Enhance

Enhance charges per hosted website, not per server. Its [pricing page](https://enhance.com/pricing) lists $0.15 per website per month for 1 to 5,000 websites (with a $10 monthly minimum), $0.10 from 5,001 to 25,000 and $0.075 from 25,001 to 100,000. Each tier’s rate applies only to the websites within that tier. Add-on domains, staging sites and extra servers are not billed, and one control panel manages a whole cluster of servers with application, email, database, backup and DNS roles.

Its [FAQ](https://enhance.com/faqs) and [installation guide](https://enhance.com/docs/getting-started/installation-guide) list Ubuntu 24.04 as the operating system, with at least 2 GB RAM, 2 CPU cores and 20 GB of disk. ARM and container-based virtualisation such as LXD or Virtuozzo are not supported. The FAQ also describes importing websites from cPanel (backup upload, SCP or login) and from Plesk. At 500 websites, Enhance costs $75 a month, against $265.99 for cPanel Premier on one server. Its model is built around clusters and per-website billing rather than WHM’s per-server accounts, so check that your plans and reseller arrangements map onto it before moving.

## Free open-source panels: Virtualmin, ISPConfig, HestiaCP

### Virtualmin (with Webmin)

Virtualmin GPL is free and covers Apache or nginx, multiple PHP versions, MySQL and PostgreSQL, mail, DNS, backups to Amazon S3, and a CLI with an HTTP API. Virtualmin Pro, from the [Virtualmin shop](https://www.virtualmin.com/shop/), costs $7.50, $10, $12.50, $15 or $20 a month for 10, 50, 100, 250 or unlimited domains, or $75 to $200 a year. Pro adds reseller accounts, more installable scripts and extra cloud backup and DNS providers. The current release is Virtualmin 8.3.0, whose changelog includes fixes to cPanel, DirectAdmin and Plesk migrations.

Webmin’s own [security page](https://webmin.com/security/) records that its build server was compromised in 2018 and a backdoor shipped in Webmin 1.890. Versions 1.900 to 1.920 were exposed only if a non-default password-change option was on. Version 1.930 (August 2019) removed it. That is old history, but it is the most serious incident in this project’s record.

### ISPConfig

[ISPConfig](https://www.ispconfig.org/) is free under the BSD licence. It supports Apache or nginx, Postfix and Dovecot, and BIND or PowerDNS. It is designed for single servers, multi-server setups and mirrored clusters. It runs on Debian 11 to 13, Ubuntu 22.04 to 26.04 and AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux 8 to 10.

ISPConfig 3.3.2 was released on 18 September 2026, and its [release post](https://www.ispconfig.org/blog/) mentions a privilege escalation vulnerability. NVD also lists [CVE-2026-61518](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-61518), an authenticated SQL injection in the remote API. A separate Migration Toolkit imports from ISPConfig, Plesk 10 to 12.5, Plesk Onyx and Confixx, but not from cPanel.

### HestiaCP

[HestiaCP](https://hestiacp.com/docs/introduction/getting-started.html) is free under GPLv3 and runs on Debian 12 and 13 or Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 and 26.04, on amd64 or arm64. It manages nginx with PHP-FPM or nginx in front of Apache, Exim and Dovecot, its own DNS with clustering and DNSSEC, and backups to SFTP, FTP or Rclone targets. It supports multiple users with resource limits.

The current release is 1.10.5. In 2026, NVD published [CVE-2026-43633](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-43633), an unauthenticated root code execution in the web terminal of versions 1.9.0 to 1.9.4 (CVSS 10.0), and [CVE-2025-30007](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2025-30007), an authenticated root command injection through DNS records, fixed in 1.9.5. If you run Hestia, keep it current and leave the web terminal off unless you need it.

## Free single-stack panels: CyberPanel, CloudPanel, aaPanel

### CyberPanel

CyberPanel is free and open source, built on OpenLiteSpeed, with Postfix, Dovecot and PowerDNS. Its [add-ons page](https://cyberpanel.net/cyberpanel-addons) sells a bundle of six premium add-ons (including Backup V2 and an email debugger) for $59 a year. The same page shows the lifetime price as both $169 and $199, so confirm at checkout. Its [install guide](https://cyberpanel.net/KnowledgeBase/home/install-cyberpanel/) lists Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04, AlmaLinux 8 and 9 and CloudLinux 8 (plus the end-of-life Ubuntu 18.04). The [changelog](https://cyberpanel.net/KnowledgeBase/home/change-logs/) shows v3.0.6 on 7 September 2026.

**Security record:** in October 2024, [CVE-2024-51567](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2024-51567) and [CVE-2024-51378](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2024-51378) (pre-authentication command execution, CVSS 10.0) were exploited at scale by the PSAUX ransomware campaign. Both are in CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue. In 2026, NVD added [CVE-2026-67614](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-67614), a hard-coded JWT secret that gave an unauthenticated root shell on port 8888 before 3.0.0. Run CyberPanel only on the latest release, and keep its admin and web terminal ports (the terminal uses 8888, according to that CVE) behind a firewall or VPN.

### CloudPanel

CloudPanel is free, but its [licence terms](https://www.cloudpanel.io/license-terms/) are MGT-COMMERCE’s own, not an open-source licence. It manages nginx sites for PHP, Node.js, Python, static files and reverse proxies. There is no built-in mail server: its documentation shows running Mailcow next to it instead. According to its [requirements](https://www.cloudpanel.io/docs/v2/requirements/), it supports Debian 12 and 13 or Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 and 26.04 on x86 or ARM64, with at least 2 GB RAM. The [changelog](https://www.cloudpanel.io/docs/v2/changelog/) shows v2.5.4 on 1 July 2026.

In 2023, [CVE-2023-35885](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2023-35885) (file-manager authentication bypass, CVSS 9.8, fixed in 2.3.1) was published, and [CVE-2024-24320](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2024-24320) affected versions up to 2.4.0. CloudPanel replaces cPanel for developers who host their own apps, not for selling email hosting.

### aaPanel

aaPanel’s [pricing page](https://www.aapanel.com/new/pricing.html) lists a free edition and Pro at $198 a year or $699 for a lifetime licence, and site banners advertised $399 and $438 lifetime deals on 7 October 2026. Its home page says the free edition manages websites, mail servers, FTP, MySQL and WordPress, while multiple user accounts for shared hosting need Pro. The download page recommends Ubuntu 22.04.

NVD lists [CVE-2026-29859](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-29859), an arbitrary file upload leading to code execution in aaPanel v7.57.0 (CVSS 9.8), and older authenticated command-execution bugs such as [CVE-2020-14950](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2020-14950). As with CyberPanel, keep the panel port off the public internet.

## Security records compared

Every panel here, including cPanel, has had serious vulnerabilities. Our [cPanel CVE build numbers](/guides/cpanel-cve-build-numbers-2026/) and [DirectAdmin 1.711 notes](/guides/directadmin-1-711-tls-privilege-escalation/) track the commercial ones. What separates the panels is mass exploitation and how quickly fixes arrive:

| Panel | Most serious incident found | Status |
| --- | --- | --- |
| CyberPanel | Pre-auth RCE exploited by ransomware, October 2024 (CISA KEV). Unauthenticated root shell via hard-coded JWT before 3.0.0 (2026) | Fixed. Stay on 3.0.x |
| HestiaCP | Unauthenticated root RCE in the web terminal, versions 1.9.0 to 1.9.4 (2026) | Fixed in later releases. Current version is 1.10.5 |
| aaPanel | File upload to code execution in v7.57.0 (2026) | Update to the current release |
| CloudPanel | File-manager authentication bypass before 2.3.1 (2023) | Fixed |
| Webmin/Virtualmin | Backdoor shipped in Webmin 1.890 after a build-server compromise (disclosed 2019) | Fixed in 1.930 |
| ISPConfig | Authenticated SQL injection in the remote API (NVD, August 2026) | Check ISPConfig’s advisory for the fixed version and run the latest release (3.3.2) |

Whatever you choose: enable automatic panel updates, restrict the admin port to your own IPs, and keep tested backups. Our [server security audit script](/scripts/server-security-audit/) gives a quick baseline, and the [compromised server runbook](/guides/runbook-server-compromised/) covers what to do if a panel bug is used against you.

## How to choose

- **Do you sell hosting to customers?** Multi-user hosting with mail rules out CloudPanel (no mail server) and aaPanel’s free edition (no multi-user hosting). For reseller levels, look at DirectAdmin, Plesk Web Host, Virtualmin Pro or ISPConfig.

- **Do you need Windows?** Only Plesk.

- **How many accounts per server?** Above 100, cPanel’s $0.49 per account adds up. DirectAdmin ($29 flat), Plesk Web Host ($62.99 flat) and Enhance ($0.15 per site) all cost less.

- **How much risk can you carry?** Commercial panels come with vendor support. With free panels, you are the support team, so pick an active project and patch fast.

- **How will you migrate?** DirectAdmin restores cPanel backups, Plesk Migrator and Enhance import from cPanel, and Virtualmin has cPanel migration. Check this before anything else if you have many accounts.

Before you move, inventory what the cPanel server really uses with the [cPanel migration preflight check](/scripts/cpanel-migration-preflight/). Mailing lists, PostgreSQL databases, custom Exim rules and cron jobs are the usual surprises.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the closest alternative to cPanel?

DirectAdmin. It has the same admin, reseller and user levels, the same Exim and Dovecot mail stack, restores cPanel backups directly and costs $29 a month per server with no account limit.

### Is there a free cPanel alternative for shared hosting?

Yes. ISPConfig (BSD licence), Virtualmin GPL and HestiaCP are free, actively maintained and support multiple users with mail and DNS. Virtualmin’s reseller accounts need the paid Pro edition.

### Is CyberPanel safe to use?

It is actively maintained, but it was mass-exploited by ransomware in October 2024 and had a critical root shell bug before version 3.0.0. Use only the latest release and keep its admin ports off the public internet.

### Does CloudPanel include email hosting?

No. CloudPanel manages web applications only, and its documentation shows running a separate mail server such as Mailcow alongside it.

### Which alternative is cheapest for many sites?

DirectAdmin Standard at $29 a month per server, regardless of account count. Enhance at $0.15 per website becomes cheaper than that only below about 190 sites per server, but it covers a whole cluster with one licence.

### Can I still use VestaCP?

We do not recommend it for new servers. NVD documents a 2018 supply-chain compromise of the VestaCP installer (CVE-2018-25117), and several later root-level bugs.
