Paste text into this ASCII converter to see the code of every character in decimal, hexadecimal, octal, binary or Unicode U+XXXX form, with a table that also shows the UTF-8 bytes. Paste codes on the other side to turn them back into text; common prefixes such as 0x, U+ and &#; are understood. It works with any Unicode character and runs in your browser.

How to use the converter

Pick a code format and a separator. Typing in the Text box fills the Codes box, and typing codes fills the Text box. The table lists each character with all five codes plus its UTF-8 bytes in hex, so you can compare formats at a glance. Invisible characters are named: SP for a space, TAB, LF for a new line, CR for a carriage return and NBSP for a non-breaking space.

ASCII, Unicode and code points

ASCII defines 128 characters, codes 0 to 127: control codes 0 to 31, printable characters 32 to 126 and DEL at 127. Unicode keeps those codes and adds more than a million more. The tool shows the Unicode code point, so € is 8364, hex 20AC and U+20AC. That is different from its UTF-8 bytes, E2 82 AC, which the table shows separately. Anything above 127 is not ASCII, and the status line tells you when the text contains such characters.

Hex output is written in capitals without a prefix, padded to at least two digits, and binary output is padded to at least eight bits, so ASCII text lines up neatly byte by byte.

Decoding codes back to text

  • Separate codes with spaces, commas or new lines.
  • Prefixes are accepted whatever format is selected: 0x41, \x41, U+0041, \u0041, \u{1F642}, A and A. Octal may start with 0o and binary with 0b.
  • Codes above U+10FFFF and lone surrogates (U+D800 to U+DFFF) are rejected with a clear message, as are digits that do not fit the chosen base.

For server admins

Hidden characters cause many confusing errors: a non-breaking space pasted into a config file, a carriage return from a Windows editor that breaks a shell script, or a byte order mark before <?php. Paste the suspicious line here and look for NBSP, CR or U+FEFF in the table. On a server, the same check is:

The table shows up to 500 characters at a time and the text box takes up to 100 KB, which covers any config line or log excerpt.

grep -nP '[^\x00-\x7F]' /etc/nginx/nginx.conf # lines with non-ASCII
cat -A script.sh | head # ^M marks a CR
printf '%d\n' "'A" # 65

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a code point and UTF-8 bytes?

The code point is the character’s number in Unicode, such as U+00E9 for é. UTF-8 is how that number is stored as bytes, here C3 A9. For ASCII characters the two are the same.

Why is the hex for an emoji longer than two digits?

Emoji have code points above U+FFFF, for example U+1F642, so their hex value needs five digits.

Can I paste HTML entities?

Yes. Decimal and hex entities such as A and € are decoded whatever format is selected.
