Markdown Editor with Live Preview

Write GitHub-flavoured Markdown and see a safe, live preview next to it, then export Markdown or HTML.

In this Markdown editor, write Markdown on the left and see the formatted result on the right as you type. Tables, fenced code blocks, task lists and strikethrough follow GitHub-flavoured Markdown. You can copy the generated HTML or download your work as a .md or a complete .html file. The editor runs entirely in your browser, so your text is not uploaded.

How to use the editor

Type or paste Markdown into the left box. The preview updates a moment after you stop typing. On a phone the preview moves below the editor. Use the buttons above the editor to copy the HTML, download the Markdown source, download a standalone HTML page with simple styles, or clear the editor.

Markdown syntax that works here

  • Headings with # to ######, bold with **text** and italics with *text*.
  • Tables with pipes and a separator row; colons in the separator set alignment, for example |:---|---:|:---:|.
  • Fenced code blocks with three backticks and an optional language such as ```bash. The language becomes a language-bash class in the HTML.
  • Task lists with - [ ] and - [x], quotes with >, links, images and ~~strikethrough~~.

Safe preview and clean HTML

Markdown allows raw HTML, so a pasted document could contain scripts or event handlers. The output of the marked parser is cleaned with DOMPurify before it is shown or exported, which removes scripts, onerror style attributes and javascript: links. The preview goes further: it does not load remote images (it shows the image address instead), drops inline styles and opens links in a new tab, so viewing a document never contacts another server. The exported HTML keeps normal images.

Common problems

  • A table does not render: check that the separator row has at least three dashes per column and that there is a blank line before the table.
  • A code block swallows the rest of the page: the closing fence is missing or uses a different number of backticks than the opening one.
  • Two lines join into one: Markdown treats a single new line as a space. Leave a blank line to start a new paragraph, or end the line with two spaces for a line break.
  • An underscore in a file name turns text italic: wrap names such as my_backup_file in backticks.

For server admins

Markdown is handy for runbooks, README files and change notes kept next to configuration in Git. If you need the same conversion on a server, pandoc does it from the shell:

pandoc -f gfm -t html5 --standalone -o runbook.html runbook.md

The editor is limited to 1 MB of text so a huge paste cannot freeze the page.

Frequently asked questions

Which Markdown flavour is supported?

GitHub-flavoured Markdown (GFM), parsed by the marked library: CommonMark plus tables, task lists, strikethrough and autolinks.

Why are images not shown in the preview?

Loading an image would contact the server that hosts it. The preview shows the image address instead; the downloaded HTML file keeps the image tags.

Is the exported HTML safe to publish?

It has been sanitised with DOMPurify, which removes scripts and event handlers. Still review it before publishing, as it keeps ordinary links and images.
