This lorem ipsum generator makes filler text for mock-ups, themes and test pages. Choose paragraphs, sentences or words and how many, decide whether it starts with the classic “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”, and get plain text or HTML paragraphs. Copy it or download it as a file. The text is made in your browser from a list of the usual pseudo-Latin words.

How to use the generator
Pick what to count, enter the number and choose the format. The text updates when you change an option; press Generate new text for a fresh random version with the same settings. The counter under the box shows the number of words and characters, which is useful when you are testing a layout that must fit a fixed length.
- Paragraphs: 1 to 100, each with four to eight sentences.
- Sentences: 1 to 1,000 sentences of six to fourteen words.
- Words: an exact number of words, up to 10,000, handy for testing field limits.
- HTML: wraps each paragraph in
<p>tags, ready to paste into a template or a CMS code editor.
Where lorem ipsum comes from
The text is scrambled Latin from Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. The familiar opening comes from a passage about pain (“neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…”), with words cut and rearranged. Because it looks like ordinary text but cannot be read, it lets people judge fonts, spacing and layout without being distracted by the content.
Good practice with placeholder text
- Replace it before launch. Search your theme and database for “lorem” as a final check.
- Test with realistic lengths too: real headings and product names are often longer than filler, and German or Finnish text runs longer than English.
- Do not leave lorem ipsum on a live site: search engines may see it as thin or unfinished content.
- For accessibility testing, remember that screen readers will try to read the Latin aloud; use real copy when you test with assistive technology.
If you need placeholder text in another script or language, for example to test right-to-left layouts or CJK line breaking, use a sample of real text in that language instead; pseudo-Latin only exercises Latin-script fonts.
For server admins
Filler text is useful for testing more than design: fill a staging database to check search and pagination, or test that a mail server accepts long messages. These commands find leftover placeholder text before launch:
grep -rli 'lorem ipsum' /home/user/public_html --include='*.php' --include='*.html'
wp db search 'Lorem ipsum' --all-tables # WP-CLI

Frequently asked questions
Is lorem ipsum real Latin?
It is based on real Latin by Cicero, but words are cut, changed and shuffled, so it has no meaning.
Can I start without “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”?
Yes. Untick the option and every sentence is random.
Is there a limit?
Up to 100 paragraphs, 1,000 sentences or 10,000 words at a time, which keeps the page responsive.
