Short answer: DirectAdmin is the cheaper Linux hosting panel. Standard costs $29 a month per server with no account or domain limit. Plesk Web Host costs $62.99 a month on a VPS and $69.99 on a dedicated server. Plesk is the choice when you need Windows Server and IIS, full WP Toolkit, or one panel shared by the server owner and site owners. DirectAdmin suits shared and reseller hosting on Linux, with web stacks you can switch in CustomBuild (Apache, nginx, OpenLiteSpeed, LiteSpeed). Plesk Migrator can import from DirectAdmin. In the other direction, DirectAdmin has no documented Plesk importer, so plan a manual or two-step move.
DirectAdmin details were checked with read-only commands on our lab server da1 (DirectAdmin 1.712 on AlmaLinux 9.8) on 7 October 2026. Plesk details come from the Plesk pricing page, system requirements and documentation (linked below), checked the same day. We have not run Plesk on our lab servers.
Table of Contents
Cost at 10, 100, 500 and 1,000 accounts
Prices last checked: 7 October 2026, on DirectAdmin pricing and Plesk pricing. These are retail list prices in US dollars, billed monthly. Plesk prices exclude VAT and show in euros in the eurozone (Web Host VPS is 52.99€). Prices from hosting providers vary.
This comparison assumes one server, one domain per account, and that you need customer accounts, which rules out Plesk Web Admin:
| Hosted accounts | DirectAdmin | Plesk VPS | Plesk dedicated |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Standard $29 (Lite at $15 holds the admin plus 9 users) | Web Pro $29.99 | Web Pro $29.99 |
| 30 | Standard $29 | Web Pro $29.99 (30-domain limit) | Web Pro $29.99 |
| 100 | Standard $29 | Web Host $62.99 | Web Host $69.99 |
| 500 | Standard $29 | Web Host $62.99 | Web Host $69.99 |
| 1,000 | Standard $29 | Web Host $62.99 | Web Host $69.99 |
Both are flat-rate per server once you are on Standard or Web Host, so the gap is fixed: $33.99 a month per VPS ($407.88 a year), or $40.99 on dedicated hardware. With yearly billing, Plesk Web Host costs $57.74 a month on a VPS. DirectAdmin’s pricing page lists monthly prices only, with an automatic bulk discount of 15% after four Standard licences, rising to 40% at 35. Plesk’s partner plans offer discounts of up to 45% with a monthly minimum commitment.
Watch the limits. DirectAdmin’s Personal PLUS and Lite limits count the admin and resellers as accounts. If you exceed a limit, DirectAdmin enters an over-limit mode that blocks account creation, email changes and backups until you are back under it. Plesk counts domains: 10 for Web Admin, 30 for Web Pro and unlimited for Web Host.

Sources: DirectAdmin supported OS, DirectAdmin installation overview, Plesk system requirements and Plesk remote backup storage. The missing PostgreSQL support on DirectAdmin is stated in its cPanel migration notes.
The documented memory minimums look backwards from what many admins expect. Plesk asks for less on paper, and DirectAdmin’s current overview says 4 GB plus 4 GB swap. Both will use more once ClamAV, a spam filter and PHP-FPM pools are running, so size for the workload, not the minimum.
What we checked on the DirectAdmin lab
On da1 the stack is Apache with PHP-FPM, Exim, Dovecot, SpamAssassin, Pure-FTPd and BIND. CustomBuild lists the other web servers as builds that options.conf currently leaves off:
da build help | grep -iE 'litespeed|nginx|proftpd|rspamd'
da build litespeed # disabled by options.conf
da build nginx_apache # disabled by options.conf
da build nginx # disabled by options.conf
da build openlitespeed # disabled by options.conf
da build proftpd # disabled by options.conf
da build rspamd
Switching the web server is a CustomBuild change, not a reinstall. Our CustomBuild web stack guide walks through it.
da license shows the licence type and limits. da1 still uses a legacy Personal licence with no Pro Pack. DirectAdmin stopped selling that licence in August 2023, and it runs on a separate legacy codebase. Every licence sold today (Personal PLUS, Lite and Standard) includes the full feature set:
da license | grep -E '^(type|nusers|vdomains|pro_pack)='
nusers=1
pro_pack=0
type=Personal - $24/year
vdomains=10
Interface and daily work
DirectAdmin has three levels (admin, reseller and user), each with its own login and menus, much like WHM and cPanel. Server software (web server, PHP, MariaDB, mail filters) is managed with CustomBuild, driven by the da command. Our da CLI guide lists the commands admins use most.
Plesk keeps server and site management in one interface. The Power User view suits a single owner running their own sites, and the Service Provider view (Web Pro and Web Host) is for selling plans and subscriptions. Plesk extensions add features such as Premium Email or WP Guardian, and the pricing page marks several of these as paid add-ons.
For WordPress-heavy agencies, Plesk’s full WP Toolkit is the more complete tool. DirectAdmin’s WordPress Manager lets each user install, update, clone and scan sites, but has no server-wide view by default. Admins fill that gap with wp-cli.
Migrating between DirectAdmin and Plesk
DirectAdmin to Plesk: install Plesk Migrator on the new Plesk server. The Plesk migration guide lists DirectAdmin as a supported source but still names version 1.51, far older than today’s 1.712. Migrate one test account first and check its mail, databases and DNS before you schedule the rest.
Plesk to DirectAdmin: we found no Plesk importer in DirectAdmin’s documentation. DirectAdmin’s import path is for cPanel backups. You have two practical routes:
- Move each site by hand. Create the user and domain in DirectAdmin, copy the files with rsync, dump and import each database, copy mailboxes with an IMAP sync tool, then recreate DNS records and certificates.
- Go through cPanel. WHM’s Transfer Tool can pull accounts from Plesk, and DirectAdmin restores the resulting
cpmovearchives. This needs a temporary cPanel licence and two rounds of checks, so it only pays off for many accounts. See Plesk to cPanel and cPanel to DirectAdmin.
Either way, lower DNS TTLs in advance, test through a hosts-file override, and keep the old server online until mail has been flowing on the new one for several days.
Which one to choose
- DirectAdmin: Linux shared or reseller hosting where licence cost per server matters; Debian or arm64 servers; or setups where you want nginx or OpenLiteSpeed managed by the panel.
- Plesk: Windows/IIS or MSSQL workloads; agencies that live in WP Toolkit; teams that want one interface for server and sites; or mixed Linux and Windows fleets with one panel.
- For fewer than 30 sites without resellers, the licence cost is almost the same ($29 for DirectAdmin Standard against $29.99 for Plesk Web Pro), so choose on features.

Frequently asked questions
Is DirectAdmin cheaper than Plesk?
Yes, for hosting more than a few customers. DirectAdmin Standard is $29 a month with no limits. Plesk Web Host, which you need for resellers or more than 30 domains, is $62.99 on a VPS and $69.99 on a dedicated server.
Does DirectAdmin run on Windows?
No. DirectAdmin supports RHEL-compatible Linux, Debian and Ubuntu only. Plesk is the option for Windows Server and IIS.
Can Plesk Migrator import from DirectAdmin?
Yes. Plesk lists DirectAdmin as a supported source, although its guide still names version 1.51, so test with one account first.
Can DirectAdmin import Plesk backups?
We found no Plesk importer in DirectAdmin’s documentation. Move sites by hand, or go through a temporary cPanel server, because DirectAdmin restores cPanel cpmove archives.
Which panel has better WordPress tools?
Plesk, if you have Web Pro or Web Host, because they include the full WP Toolkit. DirectAdmin’s WordPress Manager handles per-user installs, updates, cloning and scans, and wp-cli covers bulk work.
Does Plesk support Debian like DirectAdmin?
Yes. Plesk supports Debian 11, 12 and 13 (with Debian 10 under paid extended support). DirectAdmin supports Debian 11, 12 and 13.
