LiteSpeed Web Server Enterprise is a commercial web server that replaces Apache on cPanel, DirectAdmin and Plesk servers without changing how sites are configured. This LiteSpeed Enterprise review looks at what you actually gain on a hosting server, what it costs you in licensing and operations, and when plain Apache or the free OpenLiteSpeed is the better choice.

Short answer: On a shared hosting server with many WordPress or PHP sites, LiteSpeed Enterprise usually pays for itself: it reads existing Apache configuration and .htaccess files, handles far more concurrent connections per gigabyte of RAM, and unlocks LSCache, a server-level page cache that makes WordPress sites much faster than Apache plus a caching plugin. The trade-offs are a per-server licence, a closed-source product and one more vendor to keep patched. For a single low-traffic site, OpenLiteSpeed or nginx is often enough.

What LiteSpeed Enterprise replaces

On a cPanel server, LiteSpeed installs through the WHM plugin and takes over ports 80 and 443 from Apache. On DirectAdmin it is selected as the web server in CustomBuild. Apache configuration generated by the panel keeps being generated as before; LiteSpeed reads it, including virtual hosts, mod_rewrite rules in .htaccess files, and ModSecurity rules. Customers do not need to change anything, and switching back to Apache is a panel setting.

  • Event-driven architecture: one process handles thousands of connections instead of one process or thread per connection.
  • LSAPI for PHP: persistent PHP workers per account, compatible with CloudLinux CageFS and LVE limits.
  • .htaccess support with automatic reload, so customer rewrite rules keep working.
  • HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 (QUIC) support out of the box.
  • ModSecurity rule compatibility, including OWASP CRS and commercial rule sets.

LSCache: the main reason hosts switch

LSCache is a full-page cache built into the server. The free LiteSpeed Cache plugin for WordPress tells the server what to cache and when to purge it, so cached pages are served without starting PHP at all. Plugins also exist for WooCommerce, Joomla, Magento, Drupal and others. On shared hosting this is where most of the CPU saving comes from, and it also means customers get a strong caching setup without paying for a premium caching plugin. Our LiteSpeed Cache for WordPress on cPanel guide lists the settings that matter.

Licensing and cost

LiteSpeed Enterprise is licensed per server, with tiers that depend on the number of domains or worker processes the licence allows. Many providers bundle it with a cPanel or DirectAdmin licence at a discount. Before buying, count the domains on the server and check the current tiers on the LiteSpeed website, because an undersized licence limits the number of sites the server will serve.

Operational points to watch

  • Keep the server and the panel plugin updated: the 2026 LiteSpeed cPanel plugin CVE-2026-48172 showed that the integration layer needs patching like any other component.
  • Test unusual Apache modules before switching; most common ones are supported, but not every third-party module has an equivalent.
  • Watch the licence status after IP changes or server moves, because an invalid licence stops the web server.
  • Use the cache purge features of LSCache rather than disabling caching when a customer reports stale pages.

LiteSpeed Enterprise vs OpenLiteSpeed vs Apache

OpenLiteSpeed is free and shares the core engine and LSCache, but it does not read .htaccess changes automatically and it is not integrated with cPanel. Apache with PHP-FPM is free and universally supported but needs more memory under load and has no built-in page cache. On DirectAdmin, the CustomBuild web stack comparison covers the options side by side.

Yearly and owned (one-off) licences are also offered and cost less over time than paying monthly. For a typical shared hosting server with more than 8 GB of RAM, Web Host Essential is the entry point; Professional and Enterprise add workers for busy multi-core servers.

Verdict

For hosting companies and agencies running shared cPanel or DirectAdmin servers full of WordPress sites, LiteSpeed Enterprise is one of the few upgrades that improves speed for customers and lowers hardware cost at the same time. For small single-site servers, the licence is harder to justify and OpenLiteSpeed or nginx is a reasonable alternative.

Frequently asked questions

Is LiteSpeed Enterprise a drop-in Apache replacement?

Largely yes. It reads Apache configuration and .htaccess rewrite rules, so most sites run unchanged after switching.

Do I need LiteSpeed Enterprise to use LSCache?

LSCache needs a LiteSpeed server: Enterprise or the free OpenLiteSpeed. On cPanel and DirectAdmin, Enterprise is the practical choice.

How is LiteSpeed Enterprise licensed?

Per server, with tiers based on the number of domains or worker processes. Check the current tiers on the LiteSpeed website before buying.
