Mail Queue Stuck? Exim and Postfix Queue Fix by the Hour

Exim or Postfix queue cleared safely, the cause fixed and limits set. Hourly work at $39 an hour.

Short answer: a mail queue that keeps growing, frozen messages, “retry time not reached” or mail delayed for hours usually has one root cause: a blocked IP, a spam run from one account, a DNS or TLS failure to one provider, or a full disk. We find the cause, clear the queue safely without deleting legitimate mail, and stop it happening again, as hourly work at $39 an hour. Plan for one to two hours; the first hour covers the diagnosis.

Signs this is your problem

  • exim -bpc or mailq shows hundreds or thousands of messages and the number keeps growing.
  • Users say mail is delayed by hours, or senders get “delayed” warning bounces.
  • The log shows retry time not reached, frozen, Connection timed out or TLS errors to one provider.
  • The server suddenly sends mail to addresses you have never seen, or a blacklist listing appears.
  • Disk usage under /var/spool keeps rising.

What we do

  1. Measure the queue: how many messages, which senders, which destinations and how old they are.
  2. Find the cause from the logs: a spam run, one destination rejecting or timing out, a broken smarthost, a DNS resolver problem or a full disk.
  3. Fix the cause first, for example lock a compromised mailbox, set outbound limits, repair the relay settings or free disk space.
  4. Clear the queue safely: remove spam and bounces to fake addresses, keep legitimate mail, and retry it once the destination accepts it again.
  5. Set limits and monitoring so a single account cannot fill the queue again, and send a written report.

Works on Exim (cPanel and DirectAdmin) and Postfix on plain Linux. We never run a blanket “delete everything” on a queue that holds real customer mail.

How the hourly work is billed

  • You buy prepaid hours on the Get it fixed page. Time is used in 15-minute steps and recorded in the report.
  • If you are not sure, buy one hour. It covers the diagnosis, and we tell you how much more is needed before going further.
  • Unused time is refunded on request within 90 days, or kept as credit. See the refund policy.
  • If the cause turns out to be a blacklist or a hacked site, we tell you, and the fixed-price blacklist removal or hacked site cleanup may cost less.

What we need from you

  • Root SSH access through a temporary key, or a WHM or DirectAdmin admin login you remove afterwards. Never send passwords by email or in the order form.
  • Permission to suspend a sender that is clearly sending spam.
  • Any bounce or user complaint that shows the problem.

Prefer to do it yourself?

Start with cPanel Exim queue stuck: flush, thaw and delete frozen mail, Exim “retry time not reached” and the Exim log cheat sheet. The free Exim mail queue report script summarises the queue by sender and destination.

Frequently asked questions

Will you delete my customers’ mail?

No. We separate spam and undeliverable bounces from real mail first. Legitimate messages stay in the queue and are retried once the cause is fixed.

How many hours should I buy?

Plan for one to two hours. Buy one if you are unsure: we diagnose within that hour and tell you how much more is needed before continuing. Unused time is refunded on request or kept as credit.

Do you support Postfix?

Yes, Postfix on plain Linux servers as well as Exim on cPanel and DirectAdmin.

The queue is full of spam. What happened?

Usually a mailbox password was guessed or leaked, or a website form or script is being abused. We find which one, stop it, and set limits so one account cannot send thousands of messages again.
