Short answer: email verification tools check each address on a list (syntax, domain, mail server and, without sending a message, whether the mailbox is accepted) so you can remove addresses that would bounce before a campaign. For a one-off clean of a few thousand to 100,000 addresses, EmailListVerify publishes some of the lowest pay-as-you-go prices (€27 for 10,000, €186 for 100,000), with MillionVerifier in the same range (50,000 for $89). Bouncer and ZeroBounce state that they do not charge for “unknown” results, MillionVerifier refunds risky results, and NeverBounce lists the most integrations. None of them can make a bought or scraped list safe to mail.

What a verifier checks, and what it cannot
Every service on this page runs roughly the same checks on each address:
- Syntax: the address is well formed (no spaces, one @, a valid domain part).
- Domain and MX: the domain exists and publishes MX records, so some server accepts mail for it.
- Mailbox (SMTP): the verifier connects to that mail server and asks whether it would accept mail for the address, then disconnects without sending a message.
- Disposable and role addresses: temporary inbox domains, and shared addresses such as
info@orsales@, are flagged. - Catch-all domains: servers that accept every address at the domain are flagged, because the mailbox check cannot tell a real address from a typo there.
What a verifier cannot do:
- Catch-all and “unknown” results stay uncertain. Some servers accept everything, greylist, or refuse to answer. Those addresses come back as catch-all, risky or unknown, and you decide whether to mail them.
- Spam traps are only partly detectable. Several vendors advertise spam-trap detection, but trap operators do not publish their addresses, so no list check finds every trap.
- It does not create consent. Gmail, Yahoo and Microsoft judge you mainly on complaints and engagement. A verified list of people who never signed up still produces complaints, and Spamhaus lists senders for unsolicited mail regardless of bounce rate.

Which one fits
- One-off clean of an old list: pay-as-you-go with credits that do not expire, so leftovers keep: EmailListVerify, Bouncer or MillionVerifier. Compare the price at your list size, not the headline price.
- Many catch-all or B2B addresses: look at how unknown and catch-all results are billed. Bouncer and ZeroBounce do not charge for unknowns; MillionVerifier refunds risky results.
- Checking addresses at signup: all five have an API. NeverBounce lists the most ready-made integrations; EmailListVerify includes the API with pay-as-you-go credits.
- A few hundred addresses a month: ZeroBounce’s 100 free validations every month may be enough, if you sign up with a business or premium email domain.
- EU data protection: check where the list is processed and sign the vendor’s data processing agreement before uploading personal data. Bouncer states EU hosting on its pricing page.
How to use the results
- Remove duplicates and obvious typos first, so you do not pay for them.
- Suppress addresses marked invalid or disposable. Do not re-add them later from another export.
- Treat catch-all and unknown addresses with care: send to them last and in small batches, and stop if bounces rise.
- Keep bounce processing on in your sending tool: remove hard bounces after one attempt. Verification is a snapshot; addresses go bad every month.
- Paste any bounce you do not understand into our bounce explainer, and check SPF, DKIM and DMARC with the email deliverability test before a large send.

Frequently asked questions
Is email verification worth it?
Yes, for any list that is old, imported or collected without confirmed opt-in. Removing addresses that would hard bounce protects your sending reputation. It costs a few euros or dollars per thousand addresses, far less than a blocked domain or IP.
Does verifying an address send an email to it?
No. The verifier connects to the recipient’s mail server, asks whether it would accept mail for the address, and disconnects before any message is sent.
What is a catch-all address?
An address at a domain whose mail server accepts mail for every address, real or not. A verifier cannot confirm that the mailbox exists, so it marks the address catch-all or risky.
Can a verifier find spam traps?
Only some. Several vendors advertise spam-trap detection, but trap operators keep their addresses private, so no tool finds all of them. Confirmed opt-in and removing inactive subscribers are what keep traps off a list.
Which email verifier is cheapest?
Of the services that publish those tiers (10 October 2026), EmailListVerify lists the lowest price at 10,000 (€27) and 100,000 (€186) addresses. MillionVerifier shows 50,000 for $89, which is in the same range per address. Check how each service bills unknown results, because that changes the real cost on lists with many catch-all addresses.
Can I verify a list I bought?
You can, but you should not mail it. Bought and scraped lists cause complaints and spam-trap hits that verification does not remove, and most sending services and relays forbid them.
